10th anniversary conference
What a fantastic day!
WAAPA was really buzzing on Thursday 10th July for the ArtsEdge 10th Anniversary Conference and Celebration... from our first earlybird registrations at just before 8am until we waved goodbye to the last of those celebrating at just before 7pm it was go go GO!
In essence, the 10th Anniversary Conference was designed to encourage and celebrate engagement, collaboration and partnership between the education, arts and cultural sectors.
The conference provided opportunities for attendees to learn about the latest opportunities, practices and ideas through presentations by key note speakers Paul Haywood (University of Salford UK) who presented inspiring projects based in public art and entrepreneurship which have changed the lives of young people across the UK, Barry Kelly (Berklee Music USA) who continued to amaze us with online education opportunities which can be accessed from anywhere in the world and Dr David Sudmalis (Australia Council for the Arts) who spoke on a number of national initiatives.
All of the guest speakers provided some unique insights and perspectives into arts and culture in education in a variety of settings.
Another of the most popular sessions was Boys Can Dance… and more! This panel discussion featured inspirational young male Western Australian artists Sam Fox, Artistic Director Steps Youth Dance Company and highly recognised young artist, Daniel Susnjar, outstanding jazz musician and teacher and DCA Young People and the Arts Scholarship Recipient 2008 who will be undertaking postgraduate study at the Frost School, University of Miami, and Glen Lo, recently with Buzz Dance Theatre and another recognised contemporary dancer also currently completing his Residency at Royal Perth Hospital. This session was developed with a focus on boys in education, with concerns about the high attrition rates of boys involvement in the arts in senior schooling – particularly considering the large numbers of highly academic male students who are previously strongly involved in arts in middle school. Led by Jeremy Smith from DCA, himself a highly recognised lighting designer and with a string of achievements across a variety of art forms, the speakers highlighted the importance and relevance of their involvement in the arts throughout their secondary schooling in particular, and stressed the importance of the recognition for students – particularly boys – who have a passion and talent in not only the arts, but in other academic areas to have the opportunity to be supported and encouraged in being involved in the arts throughout their schooling – regardless of their chosen ‘after school’ plans or their ‘academic’ potential.
Alongside all this was a range of inspiring and exciting sessions presented by leading Western Australian arts and cultural organisations and practitioners highlighting how they can support in-class application of arts and culture across the Curriculum Framework (particularly in the Arts and English), support non-specialist teachers in providing arts and cultural education and work alongside specialist teachers to enhance their programs and to provide unique skills and insights. These all combined to create a fantastic and electric environment for networking, partnership planning and increased awareness of the incredible resources available with school communities as their focus... the outcomes of a number of these workshops graced the Registration Desk for all to see. Add to this a Trade Show where delegates were able to ask all manner of questions (and take away valuable contacts!) and we heard lots of plans for ongoing partnerships being developed. FANTASTIC!
The Conference was also a chance to celebrate the existing partnership between DCA and DET, including recognising a number of people who played an important role in the establishment, development and evolution of ArtsEdge over the first 10 years, as well an opportunity for the announcement of the ongoing commitment to arts and culture in education with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two Departments for a period of 3 years commencing in 2009.
A huge thank you to our guest speakers - we were delighted to have such great response to Paul, Barry and David and it was amazing to see how they were in such demand during the breaks in the day - they have all asked that their thanks be passed on for a day that was absolutely out of their expectations and for the warmth and hospitality that they received while they were here. Some other exciting opportunities developed during their time in Perth around the conference with them busily meeting with DET, DCA and arts and cultural organisations... watch this space as news comes to hand!
A gigantic thank you to our presenting and trade show organisations... many of whom were involved in school holiday productions but made a superhuman effort to be involved and present some simply sensational sessions!
An enormous thank you must go to the incredible team at WAAPA - not only for the fabulous venue... but for the wonderful staff and students who made the day so easy for us!
Finally to the wonderful and unbelievably enthusiastic delegates who made the 10th Anniversary Conference and Celebration a completely fabulous day! While not everyone could make it, it was brilliant to meet so many teachers, administrators, pre-service teachers and arts, cultural and community representatives on the day. A very special part of the day was the involvement of those who are to be recognised for their in their role in establishing and evolving the ArtsEdge partnership, and it was wonderful to welcome so many familiar faces amongst new friends.
And so with the last cupcake eaten (and for those who weren't able to make it - they were GREAT cupcakes!) it's a big thank you from all at ArtsEdge and a hip hip hooray to the NEXT 10 YEARS!!!!

let's shout out a big cheers to ...
Jazz Now! Jazz Camp 2008
Since its inception in 2002, Jazz Camp has become one of the highlights of the musical calendar and an inspiring experience for many young jazz students, and this year will be no exception!
Congratulations to BRONTON AINSWORTH and ALEX DE BARRO on being selected as the Alan Corbet Memorial Jazz Camp Scholarship recipients. Alan was the State Jazz Coordinator whose untimely passing earlier this year left a big hole in the heart of the entire jazz community. Alan was responsible for the evolution of Jazz Camp over the years, and the scholarships in his name were just a small way to remember and celebrate his passion and contribution.
We were lucky enough to be invited to the closing concert which was just amazing. For only four days of rehearsal these young musicians were incredible. The line up of tutors read like a who's who in jazz and the opportunity to work with such incredible talent is absolutely unique.
A very special congratulations must go however to Glyn MacDonald, Jazz Camp Project Manager who was responsible yet again for organising an incredible program. This was Glyn's last Jazz Camp ... however as he slips quietly offstage we just wanted to make sure everyone knew how fabulous he is... and send our very best wishes and heartiest congratulations for all that he has done.

Arts and Cultural Organisations... out on the road!
A huge hooray to the arts and cultural organisations who've been travelling the length and breadth of Western Australia!
From the Kimberley to the South West and all the districts in between - we've been hearing great things about inspiring projects and incredible activities in school communities over the past few months.
With individual practitioners to small organisations and right up to the major performing arts companies packing up the car/van/truck (and in some cases planes!)... there have been many happy faces (big and small!) during and after artists in schools activities.
As we move into Semester 2 there's a whole new round of metropolitan, regional and remote touring about to take place. Check out your artsamazing... look online here... and don't miss out.
In a country area? Make sure you call Country Arts (1800 811 883 - and talk to Katie!) and check out what is heading your way with not only the Regional Schools Touring Program but the Touring Menu. Wild Ways Banners - available to display now!
- Are you an organisation that prides itself in community engagement and conservation action?
- Are you a teacher looking for new ways to inspire your students in caring for our planet?
- Are you holding a conference that aims at raising awareness of environmental issues in either Asia or Australia?
Then you may be interested in Wild Ways!
Perth Zoo has joined the Access Asia Program in developing Wild Ways – A Conservation Art Project. This project uses art as a vehicle to raise awareness about conservation issues. It promotes positive action to encourage students to care for precious ecosystems in both Asia and Australia.
Through this project, eight banners were made by students in Western Australian schools and exhibited at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali in 2007. These banners are now available on loan for display at conferences, schools or in your working environment. Check out the amazing work that the students have created to highlight the connections made between people and their natural environment.
The banners are available for loan in two week blocks, although this is negotiable, until 30 November 2008. The banner display includes interpretative signage and hanging supports for displaying them. Each banner measures 200 cm long by 120 cm wide.

What's happening at WAM?
It's a sad goodbye to Hamish Jacobsen, Education Coordinator who leaves WAM this week after a sensational stint promoting Western Australian contemporary music in school communities across the state.
Hamish has been a fabulous advocate for music in the arts and cultural sector, with Curriculum Council and throughout education in providing and promoting opportunities and events for educators and students alike.
We want to wish Hamish all the best for his new role and say a big thanks for everything (especially introducing us all to Barry Kelly from Berklee College!).
WAM are currently recruiting a new Education Coordinator - so watch out for news on this as it evolves!
