Organisation: STRUT dance and West Australian Ballet
Event Title: Counter Point
Location: His Majesty’s Theatre
Date: 13 - 14 Nov 2009
STRUT dance is delighted to present Counter Point - three extraordinary dance artists in one remarkable show. This triple-bill will give Perth audiences the chance to see a work from one of France’s most intriguing choreographers, a rare performance by WA’s best-known dance artist, as well as a new work from one of the hot new choreographers with West Australian Ballet.
Didier Théron is renowned as a cutting-edge maker of provocative danceworks. His new piece, Harakiri is a highly physical and emotional work centering around the Japanese notion of self-sacrifice. This Australian premiere will be performed by six of WA’s most celebrated dancers – Claudia Alessi, Matthew Morris, Sue Peacock, Sete Tele, Aimee Smith and Michael Whaites.
Chrissie Parrott’s incredible career as a dance artist has spanned four decades and Counter Point will be her first time performing on stage since 1996 in the Perth Festival. Now, in a new work written and choreographed by Jo Pollitt, audiences will have a rare chance to see WA’s best-known dancer perform – Re-render is part fiction, part memoir – a revealing portrait of one of Perth’s most celebrated women.
Under the artistic direction of Ivan Cavallari, West Australian Ballet has nurtured the talents of a host of exciting, emerging choreographers. At the forefront of this wave of talent is Cass Mortimer Eipper, who will present his moving work Soul Searching.
STRUT’s Artistic Director, Sue Peacock, says Counter Point is a true celebration of dance. “This is a rare opportunity for Perth audiences to see some truly remarkable dance artists. It’s incredibly exciting for STRUT to be able to present a performance as diverse and unique as this one,” she says.
